“In a disordered mind, as in a disordered body, soundness of health is impossible.” - Cicero

About this time of year I begin to think about my mom. She passed away a few years ago and her birthday was on Columbus Day (October 12). For most of her life she was an intelligent, quick witted woman. She was well read and loved learning new things. That is until after my dad had a stroke.

After my dad retired my parents stayed active, traveled and lived the good life after years of hard work. Then my dad had his stroke. He had his stroke on Independence Day in 1996. Although he recovered to a very large extent mentally, his body never completely recovered and he found he couldn’t move about like he was used to. This limited his ability to go out. As a result my mom stayed home and, I believe, this was to a large extent the reason her mental fitness deteriorated. She just wasn’t doing enough to keep mentally fit. At the end she had full blow dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

In 2000 the U.S had 4.5 million older adults affected by Alzheimer’s disease. It’s predicted that by 2050 this number will increase to 13.5 million. In the population of people between 75 and 84 there will be 4.8 million sufferers and in the population of 85 and older there will be 8 million. That could be any one of us!

Studies show that there are ways that you can stay mentally fit and hold off the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. What’s more some of the recommended mental and physical fitness exercises can also help you stay sharper and more focused now, today. The key is to constantly exercise your brain in new and different ways so it doesn’t get bored. You see, as you use your brain for new tasks, it continues to get more mentally fit.

Brain Enhancement Tip 1 - Exercise is a quick and easy way to improve your memory and concentration and is the one that you will hear from me the most. That’s because it is so easy and natural. I know that it is easy to get caught in a rut of going to work and then coming home and then just relaxing. But instead of sitting in front of the TV all night, why don’t you get up off your assets and work out with your favorite video or go for a walk or run? Exercise releases some wonderful chemicals into your brain that can make you more alert, not only during the exercise, but for the rest of the day – right until you go to sleep. This is why many people like to start off their days with a good run through the neighborhood. Of course the type of exercise you choose will depend on what your present level of health is and the options that are available to you.
